Offensive subjects: Uhhh...nah, we're good. It's pretty hard to offend both myself and John.

Hugging this character: If this seems like a reasonable thing for your character to do, go right ahead. John has no problems with hugging.
Kissing this character: If it's on the cheek or the forehead or something like that, it's fine. Lips though, he would prefer if you didn't. Unless you're his girlfriend or there are extenuating circumstances (like a kissing booth event or drugged candy)
Flirting with this character: Go ahead, but it will likely fly right over his head.
Sex with this character: Only relevant to Microcosm but, John is in a relationship. So no. He doesn't do the cheating thing.
Fighting with this character: Knock yourself out, though giving me a heads up first would be appreciated. In Microcosm, John's strength and powers have been retained and he's got a hammer with a happy face on it that he is not afraid to use it on your head if he needs to. If your character is up to getting into a round of fisticuffs with a god then alrighty. In Singularity, he doesn't have the god thing going for him but he does have six Pokemon at his disposal and, again, not afraid to use them if he needs to.
Injuring this character: Give me a head's up first, but it should be fine.
Killing this character: Again, check with me first but I should be okay with it. In Microcosm, John has conditional immortality. He can only be killed if the death is considered heroic or just, otherwise he'll respawn in about 5-10 minutes or so. With lots of rainbow fanfare.
Reading this character's mind: ...why would you want to is the better question. But uh...go ahead if you really want to deal with that.

Like all characters in Homestuck, John uses brightly colored courier font when chatting in text format.
john types in bright blue font and uses near-perfect syntax and grammar.
the only thing he doesn't do is capitalize.
occasionally he uses emotes or uses ALL CAPS for EMPHASIS. :D
oh, and sometimes he multiplies vowels or punctuation by eight, but that's mostly when talking to vriska.
If the blue bothers you, just let me know here and I can strip out the color when tagging with your character. He doesn't really have a quirk though so there really isn't much I can do about the fact that he's too lazy to hit the shift key. If you don't want me to tag your character at all, let me know here too. Comment screening is on.

Okay so John is a nerdy American kid from 2009 who likes watching movies and playing video games. Meaning, there are potentially a LOT of characters he would recognize in a jamjar game. This portion is mostly for Singularity, since it's a bigger game and also there's CR AU nonsense to deal with.
In canon, he has explicitly mentioned the following fandoms as something he watches/plays/knows of: Ghostbusters, The Legend of Zelda (Windwaker, specifically), Superman, Crash Bandicoot, Sailor Moon, Star Trek and a whole shitton of really crappy movies that I doubt anyone plays from anyway. route_29, he has mentioned the following fandoms, usually by ways of naming one of his Pokemon after them: Tron (the original), Batman, The Little Mermaid, and Harry Potter. Obviously, these were all headcanon on my part but given his nature and interests I felt they were reasonably something he would have at least heard of.
ALL THAT BEING SAID...since fourth-walling is kind of something that comes with the territory of playing a Homestuck character, I always check to see if a permissions post is up before having John just throw out a "HOLY SHIT IT'S BATMAN!" or something. If you don't have one up, I'll shoot you a PM to make sure it's okay. BUT if you want to be super cool and leave me a comment here saying what's okay and what isn't then I will love you forever. Because that will be one less PM I have to potentially send.
Really, I just need to know if it's okay for John to actually SAY something to your character about recognizing them. I completely understand if you don't want to deal with the potential mindfuck of "hey you're a comic book character in my universe I know your whole life story." If that's the case, then he will just keep the recognition to himself.And fanboy about it secretly.
